NCSK member reviews schemes for sanitary workers in Odisha

CUTTACK: Member of National Commission of Safai Karmacharis (NSCK) Dr PP Vava during his visit to the city on Thursday took stock of different schemes and facilities for sanitary workers.Dr Vava, who chaired a review meeting at the conference hall of collectorate focused on wages of different categories of safai karmacharis, their personal protective equipment (PPE) as well as other issues relating to their wellbeing.

He also elaborated on different schemes available for mainstreaming of sanitary workers. The NCSK member interacted with 20 representatives of safai karmacharis at the review meeting and discussed various problems faced by them. He lauded the efforts of Cuttack Municipal Corporation CMC) to ensure welfare of safai karmacharis.

CMC commissioner Nikhil Pavan Kalyan explained the steps taken by the civic body for the workers as per a review held on November 17, 2021. He assured to resolves issues at an earliest as per prescribed rules. Among others collector Bhabani Shankar Chayani, CDMO Dr Satyabrata Chhotaray, PD, DRDA, Cuttack Ambar Kumar Kar and city health officer Dr.Satyabrata Mohapatra were present in the meeting.

Dr Vava, who had reviewed implementation of Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act-2013 in the city on November 17, 2021 had expressed discontentment over the civic body’s apathy towards sanitary workers. A one-member national panel of NCSK had also raised concern over CMC neglecting sanitary workers of the city and depriving them of basic facilities.
