Some people are crying themselves hoarse because the CBI showed the law minister its report before submitting it to whoever it was supposed to. Well, we know the standard of English is falling in our country. Does one really think cops could draft a report in proper English and make sense? Most of the times they are contradicting themselves and getting into trouble. Sometimes they are at such a loss of words that they do not know how to reply and start slapping people. The FIRs they prepare are so defective they do not stand up in court.
A conscientious minister who knows how to use language will certainly not want the cops to make fools of themselves, especially in a matter where his former colleagues are said to be involved. He naturally went out of the way, meticulously checked the report, dotted the Is and crossed the Ts and people start screaming at him. Well, a fruit-bearing tree has to be prepared to bear the blows of stones as well.
Lately this intolerance has crossed all limits. When some well-meaning people pleaded that Sanjay Dutt should be kept out of jail, much hullabaloo was heard. Here is a person who has so many crores riding on him. In case he went to jail many people connected with the film industry will suffer. They have invested so much money in the film. If the film is completed, there are two possibilities. In case of profits, the black money will be converted to white or lost altogether in case the film is a dud. It will be a good thing in both cases, as it will result in elimination of black money. But people want Sanjay to go to jail not realising that they will reduce many crorepatis to lakhpatis.
The government is truly in the position of being “damned if you do it and damned if you don’t”. Some metro stations in Delhi were closed down during the recent demonstrations and people complained. Well, it was done so that the people could have a long, decent walk to the place of demonstration. That is what is done when a baraat goes to the bride’s place, isn’t it? A walk for some distance gives the demonstration some publicity. Besides, walking is good for health. But some people will grumble about the weather all through the year — too hot, too cold, too windy, too rainy. Do you expect such people to be satisfied with any action of the government? The moment the demand is fulfilled, they will complain that it is too late in the day.
When the government decided to have a moon mission and a Mars mission, these grumblers were happy because it gave them another issue to grumble about. According to them, the government should provide helicopter flights to their native places and not waste money on such distant ventures. It never occurs to them that the government, out of concern for their welfare, does not provide this service. A helicopter is a dangerous mode of travel which is provided only to VIPs, as they have to take risks to serve the people.
