The apex court was hearing an appeal filed by Shah challenging the Madhya Pradesh HC's suo motu order for registration of an FIR against Shah for his remarks against Colonel Qureshi.
The court said it would monitor the probe to ensure fairness and legality without interfering in the agency’s independence or succumbing to external pressures.
Speaking to reporters, Shah apologised for the remarks and said he never intended to insult a woman officer, the armed forces or any section of society.

Shah had approached the Supreme Court challenging a May 14 order of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which directed the registration of an FIR against him for his statements.
