Major Sporting Leagues in India

Indian Badminton League

The IBL, also based on the city-based franchise format popularised by the IPL, has managed to capitalise on the rising profile of the sport in the country. Despite a few controversies — such as allegations on Jwala Gutta that she tried to stop some players of her team from playing a tie — the inaugural edition in 2013 captured the imagination of fans. The second edition, slated to be held this year, has been postponed to February next year.

International Premier Tennis League

Founded by Mahesh Bhupathi, the league looks set to carve a niche for itself in the hectic tennis calendar. Also, India’s youngest sporting league managed to grab its share of fans in the country despite the presence of several other leagues. The inaugural season — featuring the likes of Roger Federer — ran from 28 November to 13 December. It was a hit on the social media as well, as the selfies and dancing stills of past and current superstars crowded the internet.

Champions Tennis League

A brainchild of Indian tennis legend Vijay Amritraj, the CTL has been a boon to youngsters in the country. It too features six teams, each with a mix of international stars, Indian youngsters and legends such as Martina Hingis. The teams were split into two groups, and the team with the highest number of games (not sets) were winners in their respective group. Pune Marathas won the edition, and the winner’s prize of Rs 1 crore.

Pro Kabaddi League

If the inaugural season is any indication, then the PKL is here to stay. Kabaddi has a reputation for being a rural sport, and is not encouraged in cities. But the bold initiative of owners Mashal Sports has paid off and the league could give a massive fillip to one of India’s indigenous sports.

Indian Super League

ISL is perhaps the league that has made the biggest impact on India’s sporting landscape after IPL. The inaugural tournament in 2014 had a rocky build-up, due to issues related to scheduling and duration. Former India coach Wim Koevermans was one of its critics. But by the time the event ended, with Sourav Ganguly’s Atletico de Kolkata lifting the trophy in front of 55,000 vociferous fans, the gripes were all but forgotten.

Premier Tennis League

Unlike the CTL and IPTL, this league is based solely on Indian players. Organized by Amanora Education Foundation and authorized by Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA), it was earlier known as the  Maharashtra Tennis League. The third edition of the five-team, five-day event took place recently, with Dazzling Deuces beating the Baseline Bombers in final.

Hockey India League

The HIL is the only major league other than the IPL to have had two successive seasons. Besides offering most players big pay cheques for playing 30 days of hockey, the league has greatly benefited Indian youngsters by giving them the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the world’s best players and coaches.

Indian Volley League

It debuted in 2011 and ran from 29 May to 24 June. The first season was relatively successful, with Chennai Spikers emerging the winners. The second season hasn’t been held so far, reportedly due to financial reasons. There are plans to hold it next year.
