Sacramento's Thomas Not Doubting India's Potential

CHENNAI: When Indian-born Vivek Ranadive took over the reins of Sacramento Kings, one of his main goals was to promote basketball in the country of his birth. And he seems to be on the right path. On Wednesday, Sacramento Kings star Isaiah Thomas set foot in Chennai.

He had got a taste of India by being a part of a Bollywood-themed game a few months ago. But the real experience was far more overwhelming.  “I am happy to be here. I can’t describe it in words,” he said, as he was greeted with a huge round of applause by hundreds of students gathered for a clinic at the Corporation Boys Higher Secondary School in Saidapet.

“Vivek brought India to Sacramento, the Bollywood-themed game with the cheerleaders dressed in Indian attire was amazing. NBA has seen nothing like this before. Being in India has been even greater. I call my mom and dad everyday and tell them about my experience. I feel blessed to be here. Sacramento Kings has indeed made NBA bigger in India. I am excited about the future of basketball in the country,” he added in his usual animated tone.

Not for a moment did he stop smiling. Even when the other guests chose to speak in Tamil, Thomas didn’t feel left out and continued to applaud much to the amusement of the gathering. He was just awed by the celebrity status bestowed on him.

On how to expand the sport’s horizon in a country obsessed with cricket, Thomas said, “More and more resources are required. That’s how kids will start falling in love with the game. In America, we have the support and infrastructure, so it’s easy. The more they see, the more they will take to the sport.”

At 5 feet 9, Thomas is quite short by NBA standards but that has never stopped him from achieving his dream. “Height is no big issue. I am the perfect example for that. Just play hard and have fun, that’s what I teach kids too. If you have the passion for the game, how tall you are should never matter.”

Asked to pick who he is supporting in the ongoing NBA final between San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat, the 25-year-old promptly replied, “Spurs.” On Kings’ future, he said, “We are talented group, a young team. You will see us making the playoffs next season. When you are with Sacramento, only sky is the limit. Also, if there is one player I would like to play alongside – it has to be LeBron James.”

He emphasised the importance of training the right way and shared a few tips with the gathering. “NBA clinics are indeed very effective. I have my own camps in Sacramento and Washington where children learn about the game. As far as playing here is concerned, the Kings would probably play some pre-season games in India. I would love to play in front of you all,” he said, drawing more applause.  The hoopster sure knows how to create hoopla.
