The medal is nice but it has no life: Abhinav Bindra

BENGALURU: Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra has said his decision to retire is final, and there is no question of him giving it a re-think. “I've been very clear about it. I've participated in five Olympics. I'm 33 now, and have no motivation,” he said here on Saturday.

For Bindra, winning a medal is just an outcome of a process. It is satisfying but he is not connected to it. “A medal is satisfying, but it's a mere outcome. The process and journey stays with me. The medal is nice but it has no life. The Beijing medal is in a room in my house. Since 2008, I would have looked at it five-seven times. I'm not connected to it.”

Bindra singled out the Rio Olympics as his favourite. “Of my five Olympic appearances, Rio is my favourite because I gave it everything in terms of preparation. In the last month, I've never thought of  making a comeback, but have thought about what I could have done differently. The answer is nothing, other than maybe a better shot in the shoot-off. It has brought closure to my career.”
