HYDERABAD: Students aspiring for admission into engineering, medicine, pharmacy and agriculture courses now need to watch out for their score in the Intermediate examinations.

Their admissions will no longer depend completely on the performance in EAMCET as 25 per cent weightage will be given to the total marks scored in relevant group subjects of Intermediate to determine the final rank.

The Andhra Pradesh State Council for Higher Education (APSCHE) has decided to implement the much-awaited proposal from EAMCET-2009.

The rank of a student will be determined by according 75 per cent weightage to the total marks secured in EAMCET and 25 per cent weightage to the total marks secured in relevant group subjects of Intermediate examinations like mathematics, physics and chemistry or biology, physics and chemistry. The same procedure will be followed in case of students from the CBSE, the ICSE and other equivalent examinations.

The EAMCET marks will be released at the earliest and the final ranks will be released only after the announcement of the results of the Intermediate supplementary examination. The officials said students appearing for supplementary examinations were also eligible for admission into various EAMCET courses which might delay the finalisation of ranks.

On a tie between two students, the rank will be determined by taking into account the total marks scored in EAMCET followed by the score in mathematics or biology subjects, and then in physics. The percentage of the aggregate marks scored in the qualifying examinations will also be considered to resolve a tie.

Addressing mediapersons here today, APSCHE chairman KC Reddy said the initiative was being taken to improve analytical and writing skills of students. "We received requests from various sections saying that students and colleges were concentrating only on EAMCET and ignoring the Intermediate examinations. Giving weightage to Intermediate marks is likely to strengthen the Intermediate education," he said.

He further said the weightage per cent would be increased or decreased in future based on the response to the new initiative during EAMCET 2009.

He assured that there would be no changes in the EAMCET pattern.
