HYDERABAD: There are 143 prisons in the state— seven central prisons, 11 district jails, 120 sub-jails, two women’s prisons, two open-air jails and one Borstal School.

The total number of prisoners (convicts and remand inmates) is about 14,000.

The APPD has closed 23 sub-jails across the state because some are in need of repair and also there is shortage of staff.

Some more sub-jails may also be closed as they were built during the British time and there is not enough money for reconstruction.

The APPD plans to increase business and renovate the sub-jails with that money.

Many sub-jails are more than 65 years old and on the verge of falling apart.

The prisons department closes some jails and renovates them, by which time some other jails will face closure due to bad condition of buildings
