NIZAMABAD: Four persons _ two women workers and two children _ died and one was injured when a wall collapsed on them during construction of a nursing home at Khaleelwadi, near the district education office, here on Saturday.

According to sources, construction work has been going on for the last two days on a site belonging to a Dr Srinivas under the supervision of an engineer, Prakash.

The wall caved in as the JCB dug up the ground several feet near it. The two have been taken into police custody, it is learnt. The deceased have been identified as Battula Venkatamma (45), Battula Rani (5), Daruvula Padma (22) and Daruvula Chaitanya (2). The injured is D Eswar. All the workers hail from Vinukonda mandal in Guntur district.

District collector D.Varaprasad and superintendent of police D.Ramakrishnaiah visited the site and ordered rescue and relief work.

Municipal employees, students and activists of voluntary organisations conducted the rescue work under the supervision of DSP Ramamohan Rao.

Local people have alleged that municipal authorities had given building permission without inspecting the site.
