MCI told to consider increase of MBBS seats

A division bench of the AP High Court on Tuesday directed the Medical Council of India to reconsider the application of Kakatiya Medical College in Warangal district to increase its MBBS seat. The MCI may relax some norms related to teaching hospitals for the purpose, the bench said. The bench comprising justices V Eswaraiah and N Ravi Shankar, while disposing of a writ petition of the Kakatiya Medical College seeking increase in MBBS seats from 150 to 200 for the academic year 2012-13, has directed the MCI to complete the process in two months.

The MCI counsel pointed out that the out-patient departments of the Kakatiya Medical College were not located at one place on the campus and it is against the norms. The additional AG contended that the medical college in Warangal was decades old and its OPDs were situated at nearby places.
