Cop hurt in encounter with Maoists

A police constable was injured in an exchange of fire between a combing team and Maoists in the forest area of Charla mandal bordering Chhattisgarh on Saturday night.

Upon receiving information that some Maoists were holding a meeting in the forest area between Nimmalagudem in Chhattisgarh and Kurnapalli in Khammam district, the police started combing operations. When the Maoists confronted the police team, they opened fire.

The police retaliated and the exchange of fire lasted for two hours. Later, the Maoists moved deep into Dandakaranya in Chhattisgarh. 

The police team returned to Charla on Sunday morning. Constable Polaiah who was injured in the exchange of fire, was treated at the Bhadrachalam area hospital.

Later, he was shifted to Hyderabad, Venkatapuram circle inspector KRK Prasada Rao said.
