GHMC to file criminal case against owners, builder

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will initiate action against Qamar Jahan and seven other land owners, builder Ms Abbas Constructions and structural engineer Srinivasa Raju by filing a criminal case against them for the collapse of the old retaining wall at Mehdi Jung Colony, Moulali. The wall fell on two small thatched huts late Monday night, resulting in the death of six persons and injuries to two children.

GHMC officials said there was an old retaining wall with RR masonry and lime mortar on two sides of the site, with a height of about 12 feet.

The builder further raised the height by another four feet and filled the site with soil. Due to continuous rain and heavy load the 30 feet retaining wall collapsed.

Qamar Jahan and others have applied for permission for constructing an apartment building with four blocks in 2008 and permission was granted for residential flats.

Construction of floors commenced when the mishap took place.
