Site for Setting Up Waste-to-energy Plant Inspected

VIJAYAWADA: As part of the search for a suitable site to set up a waste-to-energy plant under the solid waste management scheme for Vijayawada municipal corporation (VMC), mayor Koneru Sreedhar along with officials of the civic body inspected a site at Kamidi Pothavaram village in G Konduru mandal Monday.

Sreedhar asked the town planning officials to identify the boundaries of the site and take measures to conduct land survey.

“After identifying the boundaries of the land, we will inspect the 22-acre site once again and consult the landlords,” VMC commissioner C Harikiran said in a press release.  In Vijayawada city, nearly 600 metric tonnes of garbage is produced daily.

Since there is no proper mechanism to treat the solid waste, the city is facing a severe problem with the garbage.  Though the VMC has been searching for a suitable site for the dumping yard and waste-to-energy plant for quite sometime now in the limits of Vijayawada rural mandal, Agiripalli and Gannavarm mandals, its efforts have not borne fruit, mainly due to the opposition from the locals to the proposal.

Against this backdrop, the VMC is now planning a scientific dumping yard under the solid waste management scheme.
