Couple Attempt Suicide at Vizag Zoo; Out of Danger

VISAKHAPATNAM: An otherwise fine and peaceful evening at the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park of Visakhapatnam broke into a turmoil as the security guards and staff members traced out every corner of the zoo as news emerged that a couple had attempted to commit suicide by consuming soft drink laced with pesticide on the premises Thursday evening.

The couple, who had just gotten married at Tirupati just two days ago, were learnt to have taken the extreme step as their families were against their relationship.

According to sources, P Rahul (27) hails from Kothavalasa mandal in Kothasunkarapalem area of Vizianagaram district, and is working as a part-time lecturer in an educational institue in the city. His partner N Anusha (21) is a BSc student, who is a native of East Godavari district and a resident of Kothasunkarapalem area.

The couple were in love but faced rejection from their families. However, determined to be together despite the circumstances, they got married at Tirupati a couple of days ago.

Fearing that their marriage will not be accepted by their families and that they would not be allowed to live together, the couple came to Indira Gandhi Zoological Park Thursday and consumed soft drink mixed with pesticide.

After taking the extreme step, Rahul called up 108 services and informed them of their suicide attempt.

The emergency service staff, who rushed to the zoo immediately, were unable to trace out the couple as the duo had chosen a secluded place deep in the forest to avoid being spotted by other people.

The 108 staff tried reaching Rahul on his mobile phone, but in vain as their calls went unanswered.

The 108 staff then, accompanied by zoo authorities, finally found the couple, unconscious, after a long search. The couple were rushed to the King George Hospital immediately. Police said that their condition is stable.
