RAJAHMUNDRY: The government has given its consent to the draft master plan prepared by the Municipal Corporation of Rajahmundry (MCR). The previous master plan for the city was prepared in 1971.
The revised master plan has been devised for a period of 17 years, that is, up to 2031, considering the future needs of the people. Municipal council approved the master plan in the year 2010 and sent it for the government’s approval but it was kept in the cold storage. Hyderabad-based RV Associates prepared the master plan. The present council took the initiative and sent the draft plan to the government. Expecting an increase in population up to 8.15 lakh, the plan was prepared in such a way that the city area would expand to 163 sq.km from the existing 44 sq.km.
In 1971, the population of the city was 1.65 lakh and its area was 11 sq.km. In the wake of CMNara Chandrababu Naidu’s announcement that Rajahmundry would be made a ‘Smart City’, the municipal council is initiating necessary steps to complete the process. According to commissioner S R Babu, a discussion would be held after receiving the objections and suggestions from the people.
