City Buildings Set to Have Unique Codes

VIJAYAWADA: As part of transforming Vijayawada into a ‘Smart City’, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has decided to issue unique identification code for each and every building in the city, though on pilot basis, so the public can easily identify the exact location of their destination along with route map using the ‘VMC Zipper’ application installed in their smart phones.

According to the official sources here, there are around 4,000 commercial structures and 25,000 residential buildings on the MG Road alone in the city. The civic body want to implement the programme on pilot basis on MG road before emulating the same in the other parts of the city.

The VMC had completed the survey and collected the details of ration card, Aadhaar card, property tax, PAN card and voter ID of the owners, and also issued unique identification codes to all the commercial buildings besides about 12,000 residential complexes out of 25,000 on the MG Road. The remaining buildings will be issued UID codes in two weeks’ time.

“Each and every residential, commercial and government buildings will now have this eight digit unique identification code that will be in alphanumeric form. We have roped in Zipper, a private consultancy, to help us conduct the survey and develop mobile app called ‘VMC Zipper’. The app will enable people find out the location with ease along with route map,” VMC commissioner G Veerapandian told Express.

The unique code will not only act as location and direction finder but also enable people to lodge their complaints with the VMC. The complainants need not submit his name or address, but can simply provide the UID code and the complaint will be taken care of. The ‘VMC Zipper’ app will be available to the city residents in two weeks.

Meanwhile, the VMC officials are confident that the services being provided by the civic body like water and drainage can be improved and complaints can be redressed faster. “It helps the residents as well as the government to identify a particular layout. The complete details of the owner and property, which were collected during the survey, will be kept available for the officials in a database. Though the door number will not be changed, they can use this code to pay property tax and any other taxes to corporation. People can also use the code for ordering things online without using the complete address,” commissioner added.
