VISAKHAPATNAM : Tension prevailed for some time after fire broke out on the hillocks in Malkapuram area behind HPCL Visakh Refinery which are under the direct control of the HPCL Visakh Refinery management. There are many trees and dried shrubbery on the hillocks, on which fire was noticed at around 4 pm. Due to the prevailing wind conditions and dry grass, the fire spread upwards on the hill.
The fire-fighting crew immediately swung into action. The exact reason behind the fire is unknown. Due to lack of accessibility, the fire could not be totally put off. However, all precautions have been taken to prevent the spread of fire. Officials said that the situation is under control and the refinery operations are normal.
Senior officials rushed to the refinery and initiated precautionary measures. A senior official said that there was no danger to the refinery, however the management has been instructed to initiate precautionary measures. At about 11 pm the fire was almost under control, except for smaller blazes.
