VISAKHAPATNAM : A young constable from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) died when the rifle he was cleaning allegedly went off accidentally at GK Veedhi Police Station in Visakhapatnam agency here Thursday morning. The deceased was identified as Ajay Kumar (26), a native of Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh.

According to sources, Ajay Kumar is a jawan from the 42nd CRPF Battalion, CRPF Rajahmundry in East Godavari district. He was posted in the agency area for anti-Maoist operations.

Sources said that it is the duty of all CRPF constables to clean their weapons every Thursday Morning. On Thursday, as usual, Ajay Kumar was reportedly cleaning the weapon without taking out the magazine.

The rifle went off all of a sudden and the bullet hit the right side of his neck.
