VIZIANAGARAM: Revealing steps taken to meet the water scarcity in the district, collector MM Naik said that all arrangements were being made to supply potable water to areas suffering from shortage. The collector said that every mandal has been provided with spare parts worth `3 to `4 lakh and an additional mechanic was also deployed. All hand pumps would be repaired within 24 hours of receiving a report, Naik said.

Under 21 CPW schemes, water is being supplied to 491 areas and out of them water is being supplied daily to 446 areas. After repairing pipelines and air valves with the 13th Finance Commission funds, water would be supplied to 46 more areas, the collector said.

Naik announced that a special monitoring cell was set up at the Village Water Supply Office. At the district level, a helpline with phone number 9492588878 was set up to receive complaints on water supply. The complaints would be immediately attended to and water would be supplied on priority basis, Naik said.

There is also a contingency plan. Over 550 works costing `71.91 lakh were sanctioned. Bores, flushing and dredging works to increase the depth would be undertaken. If necessary, water would be supplied by tankers to six or seven areas. As crash programme for summer, all bores would be made functional by undertaking repairs promptly. The programme would continue for 45 days with an expenditure of `50 lakh. Works under the IAP would be taken up for supply of water to hilltop areas. The collector said that the government had agreed to sanction 250 works worth `2.58 crore.

All repairs, expansion and changes of pipelines, purchase of pumpsets and improvement in water supply would be undertaken.
