Lifestyle Changes Cause of Snoring: Expert

VIJAYAWADA: Snoring is not a good sign and may be an indication to degrading health and physical condition. The awareness that snoring is not just a health problem but a social problem is also increasing among people, given the increasing number of people seeking medical help to address the problem, said M Venkata Ratnam, ENT surgeon from Sai Krishna ENT Hospital, who specialises in Head and Neck Oncology.

Addressing mediamen here Sunday, Ratnam explained that if not addressed, snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) could become a serious problem or prove fatal in some cases. The main reason for the increasing cases of snoring and OSA were changing lifestyles. “Cases of obesity are on raise of late leading to several complications and snoring is one of it. It is being considered a social problem these days. People, who suffer from snoring and OSA while travelling, prove themselves to be a nuisance and often find themselves in an ungainly situation and feel embarrassed,” he pointed out.

Snoring is a result of the obstructed path of air vents and among children it is caused due to adenoids. The cause of the snoring and OSA are diagnosed after conducting ECG, EEG, Sleep Study and other tests. Once the reason is determined, treatment ensues. “Surgery is the best option to address the problem to a large extent, compared to medication and in some cases, it is the only solution. Using the latest equipment like Coblation, such surgeries can be performed far more effectively,” he informed and urged people not to take sleeping disorders lightly but seek medical aid immediately, if they are facing any medication and in some case only solution.
