VIZIANAGARAM: District collector MM Naik ordered safety measures and called for streamlining traffic, which in turn would reduce accidents in the town. He also called for identification of density traffic areas in the town and arrange parking places.
At a meeting with police and municipal department officials at his Camp Office Sunday, the collector asked for spreading awareness among people to park vehicles at the parking lots at all busy junctions and heavy traffic areas. A temporary parking place for four-wheelers should be explored at the vacant area at Fort Junction after discussing it with Mansas authorities. Similarly, parking lots on Ramanaidu Road in the market and the APEPDCL call centre area should be developed, he said. The collector also advised identification of areas for parking places on MG Road, Balaji Junction and One Town police station area. Naik called for a report from the police, municipal and revenue officials who would jointly explore chances of establishing parking slots at other busy traffic areas and said he would review the parking issue every Monday.
Panel on Traffic Constituted
The collector constituted a committee on the traffic system in the town. He would head the Vizianagaram municipal traffic committee with municipal commissioner R Somannarayana as convenor, while the Traffic DSP, DRO and on-site APEPDCL engineer would be members. The committee would meet frequently and review the traffic problem.
Naik wanted solar signalling system set up at road corners and turns. He asked the police and traffic officials to shift the bus stop from the Collectorate Junction to Ambedkar Bhawan. Measures should be taken to see that auto-rickshaws did not stop at Ambedkar Bhawan.
On the drinking water problem, Naik wanted measures taken to see that all areas get potable water during summer. He made field visits to 10 wells at Madhupada reservoir. He also explored the chances of supplying water to Nellimarla and Ramatheertham areas from seven wells.
Naik ordered speeding up of road widening works at Kothapeta, Water Tank, Ambati Satram road, Simhachalam Meda-Balaji junction road, Balaji Junction-Clock Tower road, subway, collectorate-SBI road and other roads.
