VIJAYAWADA: As many as two lakh people who are yet to get domestic gas connections under the Deepam scheme will get them in the current fiscal.

Disclosing this during her surprise inspection of civil supplies warehouses at Gannavaram near Vijayawada on Sunday, Civil Supplies minister Paritala Sunita said another door-to-door survey will be conducted to cross-check the antecedents of 12 lakh identified  beneficiaries for Food Security Cards shortly.

She said they are making every effort to ensure poor and downtrodden do not suffer due to fluctuating prices of essential commodities and whenever the prices of such commodities increase beyond the reach of the poor in the open market, the government is intervening to ensure that they are provided essentials at subsidised prices. The minister cited in this connection sale of red gram (toor dal) recently through fair price shops at `50 per kg as against the market price of `150 and sale of onions at subsidised rates through rythu bazars.

Ration at Doorstep for Differently-abled

Paritala Sunita said those like elderly and disabled unable to come to fair price shops for getting their ration, will be provided the same at their door steps hereafter. Appreciating the efforts of Gannavaram MLA Vallabhaneni Vamsi Mohan for constituency development, she said steps will be taken to construct new warehouses in place of old ones, which are in bad shape.

The minister took the officials at a warehouse to task, when she found rice on the ground and no efforts being made to clear them. They were asked to immediately clear the ground of the rice.

On complaints that due to ePOS system under implementation, several people are not getting their rations, she asked the officials to ensure that beneficiaries get identified in the presence of either revenue officials or panchayat secretaries if the fingerprint and IRIS identification fail and are provided ration.
