VISAKHAPATNAM:  A 22-year-old housewife allegedly committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan at her residence at Guddipa village of Ravikamatham mandal in the district in the wee hours of Friday.

The deceased has been identified as P Mangapthalli (22), a resident of the same village. Parents of Mangathalli allege that her husband Sattibabu had murdered her and faked it as a suicide.

According to Ravikamatham sub-inspector K Venkat Rao, Mangathalli was married to P Sattibabu (25), a divorcee, about one-and-a-half years back.

Since the beginning of their marriage, Sattibabu was reportedly harassing Mangathalli for additional dowry to buy a bike, even though she brought `50,000 as dowry. Even the family members of the deceased allege that Sattibabu came drunk most of the days and beat her.

The police suspect that unable to bear the harassment, the woman might have resorted to the extreme measure Thursday night, when her husband had gone out. However, they also did not rule out the possibility of murder by Sattibabu.

Mangathalli’s parents have also complained against Sattibabu who was taken into custody.

Postmortem report and further investigation would reveal facts. A dowry death case has been registered and investigation is on, said the SI.
