Gitam University files patents for two hydrogen storage materials

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Chemistry department of GITAM University has filed for patent rights of two hydrogen storage materials that can be used to safely carry the highly inflammable hydrogen fuel in automobiles, said the head of the department M Sarath Chandra Babu on Saturday.

“In the coming years, replacing hydrogen-fueled vehicles would replace the gasoline-run vehicles and this would significantly reduce the carbon dioxide emissions. The eco-friendly fuel for vehicles of tomorrow has three times higher energy density to mass ration compared to gasoline,” he added.

The research was carried at Gitam University Nanotechnology Research Centre  and was funded by the Centre for High Technology, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India.

Now, nano technology research group of GITAM University is in a planning to daevelop a hybrid engine with the help of Mechanical Engineering department to suit the hydrogen fuel vehicles. “We are approaching the Department of Science and Technology to support the project,” said the professor.
