Rs 1 crore spike in hundi collection at Kanaka Durga temple

The devotees offered old Rs. 1000 notes worth Rs. 29.1 lakh and Rs. 500 notes worth  Rs. 78.46 lakh.

VIJAYAWADA: The hundi collections of Kanaka Durga temple touched a new high, beating its own past records. It received hundi collection of Rs 2.89 crore for the month - October 16 to November 16. This came to light at the end of the two-day long counting at the Indrakeeladri here Thursday.

This apart, the temple received 800 grams of gold and 10.8 kg silver. During the period Oct 1-16 (Dasara festival), the hundi collections stood at Rs 1.78 crore, while it was Rs 1.84 crore between August and September.  The collections crossed the Rs 1 crore mark three times this year. The temple, on an average, is receiving Rs 1.5 crore every month.

Temple EO A Surya Kumari said the Oct 16-Nov 16 collection is more than Rs 1 crore received during the same period last year. The increase is being attributed to the demonetisation. The devotees offered old Rs 1,000 notes (2,941) worth Rs 29.1 lakh and Rs 500 notes (15,693) Rs 78.46 lakh.

About 42,981 Rs 100 notes worth Rs 42.98 lakh were also received.

Interestingly, the temple staff were surprised to find newly-issued Rs 2,000 currency notes (48) as well in the hundi collection.
