HYDERABAD: A video, purportedly showing Hyderabad Central University (HCU) research scholar Rohith Vemula, who allegedly committed suicide in January, claiming that he is a Dalit is now going viral on the internet.
In what could be seen as a rebuttal to the report of one-man commission of retired Allahabad High Court judge Justice Ashok K Roopanwal’s reported finding that there is no material to establish Rohith Vemula’s claim of being a Dalit, the video which was shot in last January, was uploaded on YouTube by Rohith’s friends.

In the video,  shot a few days before his suicide, Rohith talked about himself and his background. He was seen saying, “My name is Rohith Vemula. I am a Dalit coming from Guntur district. My mother has raised us.”
In the video, emerged a few days after Justice Roopanwal’s findings, Rohit said his spat with ABVP was not a new one. He also spoke about the university’s decision to expel five Dalit students from the hostel premises and restrict them from entering public spaces in the video clip.

The video appeared to have been shot at a makeshift tent  near the Shopcom area in HCU where Rohith and his other colleagues had stayed following their suspension. The tent was later given the name Velivada.  The video was shot by a senior leader of Ambedkar Students’ Association (ASA) Gummadi Prabhakar, when Rohith and other research scholars were staging the protest.

Prabhakar said he had wanted to document the social background of five Dalit research scholars who were socially boycotted, including their family environments. “I thought of shooting a 10-minute video on each of the five Dalit research scholars and I started that with Rohith. He left midway when someone called him and I did not complete the shoot,” Prabhakar said.

Sannaki Munna, who uploaded the video on Youtube, said though the video was shot many months ago, only in February or March did they remember that it was shot.
