Students skipping classes will be issued show-cause notice: AU V-C

VISAKHAPATNAM: The newly appoint vice-chancellor of Andhra University, G Nageswara Rao, still loves teaching. “Before being the V-C, I am a teacher first. I will continue teaching,” he has said. In an interaction with Express, Rao said that quality of education will be his top priority.  IN an interview with Express, the V-C reveals his plans to upgrade skill development, developing infrastructure and the new rules to be brought in.

What will be your first step being the V-C?

During my inspection, I observed that many students are not attending classes. We have made a list and HoDs will soon issue show-cause notices. If they do not respond in 10 days, we will cancel their seats and hostel accommodation.

You have been associated with AU for the last 27 years. What do you think it lacks?

In the past, we used to get `100 crore as block grants which has gone up to `386 crore now. We will receive another `20 crore as RUSA funds. We had a meeting of principals on the problems of departments and colleges. On July 25, we will submit a DPR. Our main focus is on having e-classrooms in each department, well-equipped labs and good infrastructure.

What about other basic amenities in AU as there have been many complaints?

From RUSA funds, we are allocating `1.5 crore to ensure safe drinking water in all departments. Another `1 crore will be spent on toilets.

There has been no notification for it though officials have promised to undertake recruitment.

We have been given an assurance that 500 posts would be filled up soon and the government is preparing the modalities and we expect clarity on the recruitments in a month. For assistant professor posts, we expect a common entrance exam and for associate professor post, only interviews.

What are your plans for upgrading skill development?

Being the placement cell officer for the science college, we had placed 240 students last year. My plan is to focus on communication skills as many students have come from rural background. Guest lectures by renowned persons and scientists will be organised. Industry-ready curriculum will be prepared. Students should be fit for the job by the time they complete their studies.

What about the facilities in hostels? Every time we see students staging protests, especially over quality of food?

Yes, I have thought about that. The messes will be modernised and facilities in the kitchen will be improved. We will hold a meeting of the chief wardens of all hostels and decide on it. We will spend `2 crore on modernisation of hostels.

There is a proposal for new girls hostel, what is its status?

On the day I assumed the office, the HRD minister spoke about the new girls hostel which can accommodate 500 students. AU authorities have been told to identify the land and `2 crore will be allocated for the purpose.
