GUNTUR: The Guntur Municipal Corporation officials on Monday started a drive to demolish shops and other illegal structures that came up in cellars of building complexes in the city.
The GMC which identified illegal structures in cellars of 125 buildings in the city, issued notices to the owners for violating the town planning norms. As the building owners failed to remove the shops and illegal structures voluntarily, the GMC took up a demolition drive.
On the first day of the drive, the GMC authorities demolished illegal structures in the cellars of Guntur City Hospital, Quality Hospital and AVR Hospital in Old Club Road. The illegal structures in cellars of buildings in Brodipet were also removed.The GMC authorities removed staircases of shops located in cellars as some shopkeepers closed them to avoid demolition.City Planner S Chakrapani said the demolition drive taken up by the GMC would continue till the removal of all illegal structures in the cellars of identified buildings.
