GUNTUR: A two-year-old slipped into a borewell in an agricultural plot in Ummadivaram of Vinukonda mandal in Guntur district around 4 pm on Tuesday. National Disaster Response Force teams were rushed to spot to pull out the boy who was stuck 15 ft deep before he sunk further in. When reports last came in at 1 am, the toddler was responding to calls from above.Anamaluri Chandrasekhar’s mother, Anusha, had taken him with her to a cattle shed in the evening. While she was feeding the animals the boy ran out to play with the children there. He lost his balance and tumbled into the abandoned, uncapped borewell.

As soon as the news of the tragedy broke out, revenue, police, fire and medical officers rushed to the spot and began rescue operations. Collector Kona Sasidhar too rushed to the spot. People from the village are camping near the borewell to console and give support to the distraught parents.“We are hopeful that we can save the boy. His head is visible to us from above.

We have started digging a parallel hole. The boy is stuck at a depth of 15 to 20 feet. We have kept an ambulance ready to take him to the nearest hospital as soon he is taken out from the hole. We have also readied oxygen cylinders at the bore well and are supplying oxygen through a pipe to the boy,” Vinukonda Inspector G Srinivasa Rao told reporters.

A farmer dug the borewell two years ago and abandoned it on failing to strike water. Vinukonda Tahsildar K Nagi Reddy said three JCBs had been put to work to dig a parallel well. “National Disaster Response Force teams have reached the site. They are using robotic technology to rescue the boy,” he said. People from neighbouring villagers have come forth in large numbers to extend a helping hand to the NDRF teams. Heavy rains at night, however, slowed down the rescure workers. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu enquired about the incident and ordered that the best efforts be made to save the boy. “Do everything to save the child,” he is reported to have told officials.
