Hiramandalam barrage sluice gates lifted in Srikakulam of Andhra Pradesh

With heavy rain lashing its catchment area for the last two days, the Vamsadhara and Nagavali rivers have received heavy inflows.

SRIKAKULAM: With heavy rain lashing its catchment area for the last two days, the Vamsadhara and Nagavali rivers have received heavy inflows. The inflows at Thotapalli reservoir on Nagavali river was put at 15,000 cusecs on Tuesday of which 12,000 cusecs have been discharged to the sea. At the Hiramandalam barrage on Vamadhara River, the authorities have lifted 22 of the total 24 sluice gates.  

According to officials, the catchment areas of both the rivers have received 65 mm of rainfall since Monday night. The inflows was around 40,000 cusecs at Thotapalli reservoir on Sunday which has come down to 15,000 cusecs, said Totapalli SE Tirumala Rao. 

A flood like situation is prevailing in several mandals with the local water bodies are brimming. “Standing crops have been inundated in Mahadevipuram, Battupadu, Bendi, Seetarampuram, Boddapadu, Nagarampalli and Gullapadu villages of Vajrapukotturu mandal,” said K Krishna, a farmer from Nagarampalli. “The crops in my three acre field are in seedling stage. Now, the fields have been submerged. All my investments have gone waste,” he said. 

Evacuate flood victims from low-lying areas, says CM
 

Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday asked the officials of Srikakulam district to be on high alert as the Nagavali and Vamsadhara rivers are in spate. After a high-level review meeting on the flood situation in Srikakulam, Naidu suggested the officials to evacuate the people living in the low-lying areas to rehabilitation centres. With water flooding into some of the low-lying areas, Naidu instructed the officials to undertake relief operations.
