GUNTUR: Selfie craze proved dangerous for a 15-year-old boy at Tenali railway station in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district on Tuesday morning, after he was electrocuted and suffered severe burns after climbing a guarded train to click a selfie but came in contact with high tension wires. His condition is reported to be critical.

According to the government railway police, the victim, Meher Jani, from Balajiraopeta in Tenail town, learnt about a goods train transporting army tanks which arrived on Platform five in Tenali station.

In an attempt to take a selfie with the tanks, Meher Jani climbed atop a compartment of the train, which was guarded by armed personnel, and came in contact with the electric wires. He fell off the train and was rushed to Tenali government hospital, and later to Guntur hospital.

A reported 76 of 126 selfie deaths from March 2014 to September 2016 happened in India, which had topped the list of highest number of selfie deaths in 2016.

The Indian railways had, in August 2016, proposed a five-year jail term or penalty for clicking selfies on tracks, near the train on platforms and coach doors among other spots.
