VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) has released new draft syllabus for Group 1 prelims and mains, urging the public to submit their queries and opinions on it before August 3.

Almost 70 per cent of the new syllabus for Group I will be same as that of other states.
The draft syllabus was prepared by an expert committee based on the decisions taken at the All India Public Services Commission meeting held early this year.

The APPSC introduced Telugu language paper for the Group I mains examinations from this year. Until now, there were English language paper and five other subjects.

The Telugu language paper will have a maximum of 150 marks and each candidate has to secure the minimum mark to qualify for APPSC. The topics mentioned in the Telugu paper are essay writing, elaborating poetry, precis writing and comprehension, translation, dialogue writing, formal speech and grammar.

APPSC Chairman Uday  Bhaskar said, “The changes in the syllabus will not have any impact on the number of candidates appearing for Group I exams. Soon, we will also release a new syllabus for Group II exams.”

Meanwhile, the candidates preparing for Group I examinations are finding the new syllabus “quite tough”.
K Shanti Priya, a Group I aspirant, says, “We have been preparing for the Group I examination for the last two years and now the commission has released the new syllabus. Again we have to start our preparation based on the new syllabus. If the commission releases notification within a month, we will not get enough time to prepare for the examination.”

B Koti, another Group I aspirant, says, “We will raise our objections on the introduction of Telugu language paper. First of all, Telugu is not being taught in many schools and colleges and a majority of the students are choosing Hindi or Sanskrit or other languages like Urdu, French, Arabic, etc as their first language. Even though Telugu is being taught at the school level, over 90 per cent of Inter and Degree students are opting for languages like Sanskrit and French.”
