Five more Anna Canteens to come up in Guntur

With three Anna Canteens already functioning in the city, the GMC is gearing up to introduce five more of them in August.

GUNTUR: With three Anna Canteens already functioning in the city, the GMC is gearing up to introduce five more of them in August. The up and running Anna Canteens are at NTR Mirchi Yard, Mahatma Gandhi Inner Ring Road and ID Hospital near Amaravati Road.

The new Canteens to be set up will be at Nallacheruvu area, Narasaraopet Road, vegetable market of Palnadu Road, NTR Circle of main bus stand road and Pedda Palakaluru Road. The Anna Canteens will be established in 1,600 square-yard in densely populated areas.

As such, the civic body chief Srikesh B Lathkar has reviewed the progress of construction works and directed the officials concerned to complete the works before first week of August. He further instructed them to provide water tap connection, electrical supply and other basic amenities in stipulated time.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation, which run these canteens, said their demand has significantly risen. “After the State bifurcation, many head offices shifted to Guntur. As such, employees and workers come her in large numbers. So, more number of Anna Canteens, where meals are available for as cheap as `5, is being demanded,” a representative of the foundation said. Farmer R Koteswara Rao said the canteen at mirchi yard is proving much useful to commuters.
