Guntur Municipal Corporation to act tough on property tax defaulters

The civic body has taken up efforts to collect various taxes - property tax on buildings and vacant sites, water charges, professional tax and non-tax from municipal corporation limits.

GUNTUR: The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has intensified its tax collection drive. It has asked all assesses to pay the tax amount immediately to avoid disconnection of water supply and attachment of property.

The civic body has taken up efforts to collect various taxes - property tax on buildings and vacant sites, water charges, professional tax and non-tax from municipal corporation limits. The drive also aims at collecting tax arrears.According to GMC additional commissioner K Ramachandra Reddy, there are a total of 1.55 lakh property tax assesses in Guntur city.

“We have been urging assesses to pay the amount immediately to help the civic body implement development schemes. We have asked the public to pay tax and avoid disconnection of water supply and attachment of property. They should cooperate with the civic body,” the official said.

The civic body had to recover tax arrears of `20.73 crore, the official said, adding, “Only if the public pay tax on time, we can carry out development works such as laying of roads, improvement schemes for water supply, etc. We expect to recover the arrears through this drive.”
