KURNOOL: Heavy rains continued to lash upper areas in Karnataka resulting in heavy inflows into Tungabhadra dam which is flowing furiously and the reservoir brimming with flood water. Presently, there is 93.68 TMC of flood water in the dam against the total capacity of 100.66 TMC.

Till Thursday late evening, the dam has received 76,149 cusecs of water as inflows. Irrigation officials have released water from Tungabhadra dam downstream. The authorities released 8,506 cusecs of water by lifting 11 gates to half foot height, on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. The officials also released additional water by lifting another 11 gates to 2 feet height. As much as 63,118 cusecs of water from the dam was released by lifting 22 gates out of total 33 gates.

Tungabhadra dam now looks like a full pot as it is receiving good inflows from both the Tunga and Bhadra Rivers located in Karnataka for the past few days. More water is likely to be released from the dam if the inflows increase. The discharged water will reach Kurnool city by Saturday evening, the irrigation officials said.

The water from Tungabhadra dam will reach Sunkesula reservoir and then Srisailam dam through Tungabhadra river via Kurnool city. Apart from this, the Kurnool district administration has issued alert to people living on the banks of Tungabhadra river to shift to upper areas if their location is becoming unsafe with flood water.
