MYSORE: Four BJP activists, including three from the native village of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, Bookanakere, attempted suicide by dousing themselves with kerosene during a rally in K R Pet town on Monday.

Party workers and policemen intervened to stop the suicide attempt. The activists were identified as Madhusudhan, Natraj, Ramesh and Vinodh, the councillor in K R Pet municipality.

Rallies in support of Yeddyurappa gained momentum across the old Mysore region, with party workers and members of Veerashaiva Vedike coming out to the streets in Mandya, Chamarajanagar and Mysore districts.

At Santhemarahalli, activists of the Veerashaiva Mahasabha staged a dharna, urging the BJP executive to allow Yeddyurappa to continue in office.
