MANGALORE: The arrest of a youth by Mangalore South police in connection with the murderous assault on Karnataka Beary Sahitya Parishat president Rahim Uchil is seen as a major break through. The accused was identified as Umar Farooq (26) from Ullal.

Sources in Mangalore South police station said though Umar Farooq was not directly involved in the incident, he revealed the names of those behind the assault.

Miscreants armed with lethal weapons assaulted Rahim Uchil at Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy office in Presidium complex near Ananda Shetty Circle in Attavar at around 1 pm on March 15 and fled while crowd gathered in front of the office.

Police sources said Uchil, a strong supporter of the BJP invited the wrath of fundamentalists by issuing statements in favour of Hindu leaders.

After he became the president of Beary Parishat, the death threats from his own community had increased, sources added.

Farooq was remanded in judicial custody after being produced before the court on Thursday.
