BANGALORE: Demanding the state government to implement the 2006 bill on the Karnataka Professional Educational Institutions (regulations of Admission and Determination of Fee) Act 2006, the JD (S) members in the Council walked out of the House on Friday.
Primary and Secondary education minister Vishveshwar Hegde Kageri, also the House leader in the Council said the Bill was presented to keep the Karnataka Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admission and Determination of Fee) Act 2006,in abeyance and enable the state government to arrive at a settlement for admissions in professional colleges in the current academic year.
JD(S) leader M C Nanaiah said the state government was trying to play with the private institutions at the cost of the students.
Seeking to know how long it could keep the original Bill in abeyance, the JD (S) member said, “The government is abdicating from its responsibility in enforcing a legislation which was passed in the Legislature seven years ago.”
Medical Education Minister K Ramdas tried to explain the situation which forced the government to go for negotiation with the private institutions regarding fee structure and the number of seats available for admission.
“Following the recent directions of the Supreme Court suggesting to conduct an All India Common Entrance Test for admission into professional institutions, the government is inclined to go for negotiations which would begin from tomorrow,” he said.
In protest against the government’s stand on the issue, the JD (S) members led by M C Nanaiah walked out of the House. The Bill was however, approved by the House unanimously in absence of the JD (S) members.
