Hubli city awash with colours on Rang Panchami

The city of Hubli erupted in a riot of colours on Sunday, as Rang Panchami was celebrated with pomp and gaiety on Sunday.

Kamaripet, New Myadar Oni, Ganeshpet, Maratha Galli and Channapet in Old Hubli wore a colourful look. The spirit of Holi was omnipresent, with revelers splashing their loved ones and friends with different hues of colours.

Police Commissioner BA Padmanayan, who spoke at a programme organised by the Kariyamma Devi Temple in Ganeshpet said: “It is good that Holi is being celebrated in the right spirit. It is known that when all colours mix, it produces white, which symbolises peace and tranquility. I appeal to the citizens to celebrate peacefully.”

At a programme in Ganeshpeth, leaders from different communities and religions appealed to the public to celebrate Holi as one. Revelers at Hosur Circle painted their bodies with silver.

 At New Myadar Oni, a huge effigy of Kamanna, measuring 21 ft, was carried through the streets, and finally burnt amidst pomp and grandeur.

At Channapet, revelers were seen dancing to music from sound systems. The speakers used at New Myadar Oni, supposedly was the biggest in Hubli. Umesh Halakatti, a driver, said: “It is a time when everyone celebrates and has fun. It is also said that if one is sad during Holi, that person will be sad for the rest of the year.”

Youngsters were seen zipping through the roads on motorbikes, wishing friends and strangers alike. Kids too did not miss out on their share of fun, as they played under the watchful gaze of parents.

The elderly were not left out, as they took to the streets, joining the revelers in the all the celebrations.

All in all, it was a positive and happy frenzy that enveloped everyone, including police officials on duty.

Not all are happy

As a curfew was imposed in sensitive areas due to the celebrations, several people were left without transport and essential facilities. City roads overflowed with plastic bags, bottles and debris, which will take a few days to clear.
