Congress meet for Lok Sabha bypolls

Senior Congress leaders held a meeting here on Wednesday to work out strategies for byelections for Mandya and Bangalore Rural Lok Sabha seats.

KPCC president G Parameshwara, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, former Union ministers C K Jaffer Sharief and M V Rajasekharan were also present at the meeting.

Stating that there are several leaders who wish to contest the byelections, Parameshwara said: “Names would be shortlisted in a couple of days.”

A petition seeking a stay on holding the byelections is also pending before the Supreme Court and the case is expected to come up for hearing on Friday, he said.

With the Congress in power now, the party has better chance to win both the seats, he said and added that the issue of finalising the candidate to the Council seat also came up for discussion.

During the meeting it was also decided to felicitate both AICC president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi for scripting the party’s victory in the May 5 Assembly elections.

The felicitation meeting will be organised in Bangalore next month, he said.
