Though politics runs in her blood, it is for the first time that Geetha Shivarajkumar is contesting elections as a JD(S) candidate. She is supported by her brother and Sorab MLA Madhu Bangarappa and actor-husband Shivarajkumar. Geetha spoke to Express after campaigning. Excerpts:
Which factor gives you an additional mileage? Daughter of Bangarappa or daughter-in-law of Dr Rajkumar?
Certainly my father whose contributions were significant as chief minister and Sorab MLA. Next is my mother because it is her wish that I continue my father’s work.
Do you have any political experience?
Yes. I campaigned for my brother Madhu during the last Assembly elections.
You are facing a former CM. Are you scared to fight a senior politician?
I am not scared of anybody. I decided to contest banking on my father’s work. I have support from women, Madhu, Shivaraj and party workers. There is no question of fear.
It is said that Bangarappa paid little attention to the development of Sorab constituency and that it witnessed development only when Kumar became the MLA.
I do not agree. My father introduced the Aradhana scheme, upgraded McGann Hospital and constructed the Shimoga KSRTC bus stand among other works.
What issues will you pay attention to if elected?
I will give priority to works like laying of roads, providing drinking water, establishing mini ports in Byndoor, maintaining temples and supplying power to rural areas.
