London to Host Yakshagana Contest

MANGALORE: A total of 42 Thenku and 41 Badagu Thittu teams will battle for `10 lakh prize money at London Yakshagana Competition (LYC).

Kuntikanamata Limited, a Specialist Strategic Brand Management Consultancy, will be organising the event. Operations director Ganesh N Bhat Bayar told reporters that 26 Yakshagana troupes will take part in the four-day auditions for Thenku Thittu in Town Hall from Tuesday. Seventeen teams will take part in the Badagu Thittu auditions in Udupi from July 21. Each team will given an hour’s time to perform and an honorarium of `15,000.

The first round of the Thenku Thittu competition will be organised at Nehru Maidan from August 1 to 7 and Badagu Thittu competition will be held at Kundapur from August 9 to 15.

Each team will be given 2 hours 45 minutes to perform. The winning teams will take part in the semi-finals in Bangalore.

Losing teams can take part in the second round that will be organised at Jaganmohan Palace in Mysore. The quarter-final and semi-final competitions will be organised at Shalini Maidan in Jayanagar from August 24.

The finals will be held on August 31, he said. The winner and runner-up teams will be given an opportunity to perform in in London the last week of October, Bhat said.
