The Regional Transport Office (RTO) stepped up the drive on Saturday and seized 10 buses, including one KSRTC bus, which had failed to install the emergency door.

The RTO after extending the deadline on couple of occasions swung into act and issued notices to 18 buses, including four KSRTC buses, that did not have emergency doors on May 1.  The RTO seized 10 buses on Friday and Saturday, which included contract carriages to Dharmasthala, buses to Mysore and Bangalore, RTO Afzal Ahmed Khan told Express. Following reports submitted in the wake of string of fire mishaps in Volvo buses, the government decided to make emergency door compulsory in buses on long routes.

This emergency door is in addition to emergency exits existing in all buses.  The Transport Department initially fixed February 20 as the deadline for fixing emergency doors and extended it to April 30.
