For Them, Disability Was Not a Hurdle

BENGALURU: Most students who appeared for the second-year pre-university examinations are celebrating their success and here are some ‘special students’ who too excelled despite all odds.

According to information available from the PUE Department, this year, over 444 visually challenged students appeared for the exams and 269 managed to clear them. Express met a few who managed to secure first class.

Despite encountering various difficulties, challenges and trials, over 10 visually impaired PU students at ‘Samarthanam Trust For The Disabled’ have scored first class.

Nethravathi, who studied at NMKRV Women’s college (Arts stream), said, “In class 10, I scored 69 per cent and in II PU, I scored 66 per cent. I could achieve this mainly due to the training provided by volunteers.”

“Whenever we approached them, they guided and fed us with knowledge and information. I thank the scribes who wrote my papers. Without them, I would not be where I am today,” she said.

Sujatha, another visually challenged student at Samarthanam, was overwhelmed with joy after getting a first class. She studied at Government PU college, Basavanagudi (Arts stream).

“I am a visually challenged girl. Every day, I battle health issues. Even when I walk, I need some one to lead and guide me. I want to thank all the Samarthanam volunteers, scribes, teachers and friends. It’s because of their support I could do well and score good marks in my exams,” Sujatha said.

As many as 46 visually challenged students from Samarthanam took up the II PUC examinations this year. While 10 of them got first class, 31 passed with second class. Yallappa Hulaganavar, a student from Dharward, is the highest scorer, with 85 per cent.

Samarthanam Trust For The Disabled is a non-profit organisation that runs a primary and secondary school for the disabled. Visually impaired students here are imparted education using modern technology.
