5 Varsities in State Yet to Get VCs

SHIVAMOGGA: As many as five universities in the state do not have full-time Vice-Chancellors for the last six months. Due to this, universities are unable to make any major decisions. 

Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Ballari, Kuvempu University, Shivamogga, Rani Channamma University, Belagavi, Karnatak University, Dharwad and Gulbarga University, Kalaburagi, are yet to get full-time Vice-Chancellors.

All the five universities have in-charge Vice-Chancellors who do not have power to take any major decisions. Apart from this, the government has not yet nominated Syndicate members to the universities, according to a professor, who is one an aspirant for the post at one of the universities.

Earlier, the government used to name Vice-Chancellors to universities, completing all formalities, before the incumbent Vice-Chancellor demited office.

The government has constituted a Search Committee for Sri Krishnadevaraya University under the chairmanship of Dr M M Kalaburgi,.

The committee held a meeting on January 13 and finalised 14 names including those of Prof Balasubramanya and Prof Nandidevaru from Karnatak University, Dharward, Prof S L Hiremath, Prof P K Khandoba and Dr Santhappa of Gulbarga University, Dr Joganshankar from Mangaluru University, Prof Sidde Gowda, Prof Shivashankar and Dr Basanna of University of Mysore. These will be forwarded to the government.

Scene at Kuvempu University

A Search Committee has been set up for selection of the VC of Kuvempu University under the chairmanship of Tumkur University Vice-Chancellor Prof Rajasab.

Litterateur Dr Chandrashekar Kambar and Visvesvaraya Technological University former V-C Dr K Balaveera Reddy have been nominated by the Governor while the UGC has nominated Prof P Balaram as members. The meeting of the committee will be held on Monday next.

The aspirants for the Vice- Chancellor’s post include in-charge V-C Prof T R Manjunath, registrar Mallika Ghanti, Prof C S Bagewadi, Prof Rame Gowda, Dr Sannarama and former vice-chancellor of Gulbarga University Prof E T Puttaiah.

They have not only applied for the Kuvempu University post, but for other universities also.

Another aspirant, Dr Sannarama, had earlier complained to the Governor against Prof Manjunath regarding promotion.
