BELAGAVI: Frustrated by the lack of police action after allegedly being sexually harassed by a senior official, a junior assistant engineer of the Hubli Electricity Supply Company Ltd (HESCOM), Belagavi Rural, attempted to commit suicide by overdosing on tablets on Thursday.

The woman, who was residing in a paying guest accommodation near her office, is said to have consumed about 15 tablets at around 4 am. She was rushed to the district hospital after complaining of discomfort.

Doctors confirmed that she is out of danger.

The woman, hailing from South Karnataka, had written a suicide note in which she stated that she was ending her life as she was disappointed after no action was taken against her senior after he sexually assaulted her.

She alleged that T B Majjagi, an executive engineer in HESCOM, Belagavi Rural, had mentally harassed her after she rejected his proposal of having physical relations. She alleged he had grabbed her hands with the intention of raping her when she had gone to his chamber three months ago.

She then filed a sexual harassment complaint with the Malamaruti police.

She alleged that Majjagi, after securing anticipatory bail from a local court, had called and threatened to get her killed if she does not withdraw her complaint.

He is also said to have asked the woman to be his second wife.

When no action was taken even after weeks, the woman complained to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during the winter session in Belagavi last month.

Siddaramaiah instructed the police to file a rape case and put Majjagi behind bars. However, Majjagi is roaming free, she said.
