Confusion over HSN code hits GST implementation

BENGALURU: Confusion over Harmonised System of Nomenclature (HSN) has become a stumbling block to the smooth implementation of GST at city hospitals. HSN is an 8-digit number widely used in many countries to classify goods for taxation purpose.

Sources in Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology said that the hospital was finding it difficult to find the HSN code for around 60 anti-cancer drugs due to which GST implementation was being hindered.
“How do we know which slab the drug falls under if we don’t have the code? Merely going by the description of the slab is confusing. For example, oral rehydration salts may come under 5% per cent slab but we need specific codes for each drug,” said a finance department official in Kidwai.
