Two die in bus accident in ghat road in Karnataka

According to the police of Beltangady precinct, the Kerala-registered bus from Moodigere went out of control while the driver was negotiating a hairpin bend on the ghat road to Mangaluru at about 2 pm

MANGALURU: Two people died and 20 others were seriously injured when a private bus fell onto its side on State Highway 26A in Charmadi Ghat road on Tuesday.

Hajiba (47) and Babbunni (47) were killed in the accident. They were travelling from Bababudangiri in Chikkamagaluru district to Ullal Syed Madini Dargah.  The bus belongs to Vishwanatha Tours and Travels of Kerala and was carrying 40 passengers, all from Andhra Pradesh.

Sources in Belthangady police said the bus was plying from Mudigere to Mangaluru. The accident took place when the bus driver lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a hairpin curve of Charmadi Ghat around 2pm. The bus careened and veered before falling on its side, killing both Hajiba and Babbunni on the spot.

The 20 injured in the accident are yet to be identified.

The injured were rushed to a private hospital in Ujire. According to doctors, some of them may need additional treatment and will be shifted to Mangaluru Wenlock hospital, while many were recovering after sustaining bruises and fractures.

Anni Malekudiya who was the first one to rush to the spot on a rescue mission told Express that he tried to help a few people out, but the bus had fallen in such a way that he had to enter through the emergency exit. The bus was lifted with the help of a crane from Charmadi.

Traffic piled up on Mudigere-Charmadi-Undaje route for two hours as the bus had blocked the road. Belthangady police and fire personnel rushed to the spot and cleared the traffic.
