According to the police,  Darshan and his sister Niharika (4) were riding pillion on a scooter driven by their grandfather T B Rajanna, who was wearing a helmet, while Darshan and Niharika were not.
Rajanna had picked Darshan up from school and was taking him to his house in  Cottonpet when the accident occurred. Around 12.15 pm, when their vehicle was near the Sangolli Rayanna Circle, a KSRTC bus in front of them started to take a U-turn.

The two-wheeler hit the bus due to which Rajanna and Niharika fell on the left side of the scooter, while Darshan fell on the right side. Though the bus driver applied brakes after the collision, Darshan was run over by the back wheel of the bus and he died on the spot. Rajanna and Niharika sustained minor injuries.
Vijay Kumar (38), the driver of the bus, fled from the scene as soon as a crowd gathered. The driver later surrendered at the Chickpet Police Station, and has been booked under Sections 304 (A) (causing death by negligence), 279 (rash driving on a public way) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC.

But some reports stated that police personnel caused the accident by trying to stop the two-wheeler. However, Rajanna’s brother, speaking to Express, denied the allegations. He said, “The traffic police had no role in the accident. It was caused by total negligence of the bus driver.” Police personnel too denied the allegation and said traffic police personnel did not try to stop the scooter.

Darshan was a Class 3 student of Vidya Vardhaka School, Rajajinagar, and a resident of Yeshwantpur. His father Srinivas is an employee of Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL). Police  said they would collect CCTV footage and investigate further.
