Shortage of staff at Karnataka Institute of Medical Science hospital resulted in parents to take charge

Media persons who witnessed the incident brought the issue to the notice of medical education minister Sharanparkash Patil, who was visiting the hospital.

HUBBALI: Shortage of staff at Karnataka Institute of Medical Science Hospital (KIMS) resulted in parents to take charge of their infant’s deteriorating condition. The incident reportedly happened in front of medical education minister Sharanprakash Patil.

Karevva Padesur, a native of Hooli village in Saundatii taluk, had arrived at KIMS for treatment of her two and a half years daughter Goutami, who was suffering from fever from last few days.

The child was admitted to children's block and doctors on Saturday morning and was referred to undergo some test. However, when the parents asked nurses and staff boy present there for assistance, none came to their help. As the girl was to have a continuous supply of oxygen, Karevva’s relative carried the heavy cylinder and her mother carried the sick child. They took her to the diagnostic room, which is over 300 meters away.

Media persons who witnessed the incident brought the issue to the notice of medical education minister Sharanparkash Patil, who was visiting the hospital.

In a statement that reflected sheer callousness on part of the minister, referring to the media, he said, “It is not a big matter, why are you people making this an issue? There is a shortage of staff and officials will be instructed that such kind of incident should not happen in future."

“We don’t know, whether the hospital staff offer help to the sick patient or not, at least they should have provided a stretcher for us,” said Goutami’s grandfather.
